The Benefits of a Remote Internship

Updated: Dec 2, 2020

Sage Advice

With so many aspects of our daily life affected by efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19, going out of the house to intern is a challenge. We know that summer internships provide valuable work experiences that prepare you for your next step in college or after graduation, invaluable experience you shouldn't miss. Remote work has quickly become the new normal in small and large companies alike and a remote experience will prepare you for this environment.

Not convinced yet?

Here are just some of the benefits of a virtual internship:

1. Save Time and Money.

The logistics and costs associated with traveling to a new city to complete an internship can get pretty expensive. Flights, housing, and other bills add up. Even if you intern in your hometown, the costs for daily transportation and commuting to and from your place of work can make it hard to enjoy the work to the fullest.

2. Flexibility.

While most internships require you to clock in and clock out, working remotely means that you decide when and how you work, as long as you’re meeting your deadlines. So feel free to work in your PJs wherever you focus best, even on the couch. It’s also a great way to balance work and your personal life, even if you’re taking classes.

3. Understand the Modern Workplace.

In a workplace that is becoming more virtual, gaining experience working remotely is key. You will practice digital communication, research, and knowledge of applications and platforms. You are able to prove your ability to get tasks completed and contribute to the company. You’ll learn to manage your time independent of a supervisor having to constantly check in.

4. Develop Important Job Skills

As you intern, you will utilize different programs and tools to complete your work. Actively using them builds your competency and experience. Add these new skills to your resume. This way, even though you stayed home, the experience you gain adds to your profile and makes you more desirable to employers.

As long as you have internet connection, you can intern for any company, anywhere in the world!
